The Swansea Festival of Stitch in August brought to my attention GOWER YARNS, which is described as 'A WORLD FOR KNITTERS AND SEWERS' and
it certainly is n't over-selling itself.

As an avid knitter and seamstress - I can't use the word sewer without thinking about drains
- I thought I knew of all the places to go for all things haberdashery - but this one had passed
me by. Just off the B4290 at Llandarcy, this little Aladdin's Cave is stacked with all the accoutrements for knitting, crochet, dressmaking, quilting and all things stitch, with the added bonus of ample free parking.
To the front of the shop I found every sort of gadget that I had ever wanted, and some that I didn't know I needed. As I have got older, I have struggled to thread a needle without a
nifty little bit of kit that I think I inherited from my mother. It's called a Stitch Witch - it's made
of plastic, and you simply pop your needle, eye downwards into the little chimney; the thread is then laid across the aperture and a button depressed - then hey presto your needle is threaded. They only cost a couple of pounds but I have found them invaluable. You'll find these along with other needle threading gadgets among the goodies in Gowe r Yarns.
I used to do a great deal of knitting but got out of the habit until I became a grandma, now I love to make sweaters with intricate cable and Fairisle designs. Here I discovered wools and yams that inspired me to start making for myself again - the colours for this winter include some fabulous jewel shades.
I believe that if you are going to go to the effort of knitting, you should use the best yam that you can afford, and here there are wools to suit all budgets. From economical acrylics up to luxury alpaca and cashmere - you'll find it all here, along with numerous pattern options. New for this year, patterns will be
available to download or you can pick up a printed version if you prefer.
Owner Neville Fox and his team are always on hand to offer advice to /
novice stitchers, but are happy to let you just browse if you prefer.
